Last week around 80 Google Help workers subcontracted thru Accenture received layoff notices. This announcement from Google/Accenture comes just weeks after 119 Google Help workers announced their unionization efforts with AWU-CWA. We're mobilizing every option available to us.
The National Labor Relations Board has just reached a settlement with Google and the Google subcontractor Modis, on behalf of Tuesday Carne, a Google Data Center worker illegally fired for discussing wages. Carne was fired after she asked about holiday pay for herself and other workers at a biweekly meeting between employees and management. In the termination letter, Carne was informed by her manager that her conduct was “un-Googley,”— a vaguely defined term used within Google, often used as a catch-all for having a ‘bad attitude.’ On Wednesday, December 1, 2021 Alphabet Workers Union-CWA filed an Unfair Labor Practice Charge on behalf of Tuesday Carne. As part of her settlement, Tuesday Carne will receive front and back pay and Google and Modis have been forced to publicly declare their wrongdoing in this instance of unlawful termination.
Last month, six Google contractors claimed that they were fired from their employer, Appen, for speaking up about their working conditions. These contractors were later reinstated by the company after The Washington Post reported on their dismissals and the subsequent ULP charges filed by AWU-CWA.
